World Post Day: PAPU Secretary General pledges to champion innovation

At the invitation of the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania, the Secretary General of the Pan African Postal Union (PAPU), Mr. Sifundo Chief Moyo, attended the commemoration of World Post Day in Tanzania’s capital city, Dodoma. The ceremony was presided over by the country’s Vice-President, Mr. Mpango Philip. Two event was punctuated by two key highlights: the official handover of operating equipment to Tanzania Posts Corporation and presentation of awards to winners of the letter-writing contest.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Moyo began by congratulating Tanzania for setting aside a whole week to celebrate World Post Day. He added that in the 2022-2025 cycle, PAPU will strive to encourage and support innovation, including facilitating benchmarking among our members to optimize sharing of innovations among PAPU members, supporting and coordinating the digitization of postal services and assisting stakeholders in their transformation agenda.

He went on to point out that PAPU will lead research and development efforts in Africa’s postal sector, promote cooperation platforms that will facilitate skills transfer and foster the search for partners who can deliver high quality and value-added technologies to the sector.

According to the PAPU Scribe, it goes without saying that all these measures must be underpinned by a clear and unequivocal commitment to innovation on the part of governments and postal organizations, as demonstrated by the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania.

“I wish to reiterate and emphasize the need to use the lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic disruptions, as well as other disasters to transform and innovate for resilience, adopt appropriate technologies and operate sustainability in order to serve customers and the African citizenry, creatively while achieving viability for the Operator”, he concluded.

The vice-president of Tanzania said he was aware of the efforts the country’s postal sector was making to implement various operational reforms within the organization, which are fully in sync with the national postal policy and the objectives set out in Tanzania’s National Agenda 2025. He added that the services offered by the Post must be connected to digital networks to cater to the needs and expectations of customers and the current environment. The digital post is expected to unite people, bring governments and people closer together, link up businesses and marketing to online commerce, and connect the business world to all communities.

Alongside the Vice-President of Tanzania and the guests, the PAPU Secretary General witnessed the handing over of production equipment (vehicles and motorbikes) for the enhancement of the Post.
